In 1967, following service in the U.S. Navy salvaging war debris and working in the New Orleans shipyard industry, Capt. Andrew “Mac” McKinney established Mac Towing, Inc. His initial investment consisted of purchasing a quarter of a tug boat until he could later buy out the rest of the shares to become owner and operator of the M/V G.F. McCall. By initially working the canals of Slidell, Louisiana, he was soon able to buy another vessel and expand the business. He began developing long term partnerships with larger companies and established roots in Baton Rouge. Working with his five children, the company rapidly grew into McKinney Towing.
Mac’s son, Capt. Steve McKinney could run a boat by the time he graduated high school. Born and reared on the river, he soon recognized a need for salvage equipment along the Mississippi River. The company purchased the Southern #6 from Southern Shipyard in Slidell to be named the D/B Robyne and began raising sunken boats and barges. With Mac’s salvage experience and Steve’s insight, McKinney Salvage & Heavy Lift thrived. Today, Steve and his two sons “Andy” and Aaron McKinney have become masters of their trade. They have expanded the company to not only offer towing services and heavy lifts, but to include marine firefighting and oil spill response. And as such, McKinney Salvage & Heavy Lift, Inc., has become one of the premier salvage companies on the inland waters.
